JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The Indonesia Ministry of Trade has issued an Import Approval Letter (SPI) for 2,000 tons of yellow onions in response to the soaring commodity prices.
Minister of Trade Agus Suparmanto explained that the Import Approval Letter is issued in stages in accordance with the Horticultural Product Import Recommendation (RIPH) given by the Directorate General of Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture.
"We have issued a permit to import yellow onions because we have just entered RIPH, so we process it immediately, and when it exits RIPH it does not necessarily immediately come out (the permit), we have to process the permits for some time," Agus Suparmanto said.
On the same occasion, Director General of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Trade Indrasari Wisnu Wardana explained that the import approval letter for yellow onions that had been issued by the Ministry of Trade for 2,000 tons of yellow onions imported from New Zealand.
"What has come out is 2,000 tons of onions ... Yes, from New Zealand," Indrasari said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Market Traders Association (Ikappi) Abdullah Mansuri said the average price of yellow onions in traditional markets has now reached IDR170,000 to IDR200,000 per kilogram.
"Yellow onions, which should have the highest price of IDR25,000, are now in the range of IDR170,000 per kilogram, some even sell for IDR200,000. The problem is that the goods are not so many," Abdullah said.
According to him, the price of onions has never touched the current price range, and it even has exceeded the price of rice and the price of meat per kilogram. He hopes the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture can move quickly to reduce the high prices of these onions.
