KPAI: Hundreds of Children Experiencing Health Problem due to Sukoharjo Factory Waste

KPAI Commissioner of Social and Child Affairs in Emergency Situation, Susianah Affandy.

SUKOHOARJO, NNC - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) reported that there are hundreds of children who are experiencing health problems due to factory waste in Sukoharjo.

Following the complaints by residents of Nguter Sub-district, Sukoharjo Regency related to odor pollution from PT Rayon Utama Makmur (RUM), KPAI sent a team to conduct supervision to Sukoharjo consisting of Commissioner of Education Sector Retno Listyarti and Commissioner of Social and Child Affairs in Emergency Situation, Susianah.

KPAI visited the location of the settlement nearest the location of the factory, only a radius of about 500 meters, that is in Tawang Krajan Hamlet, Gupit Village, Nguter Sub-district, Sukoharjo Regency. The villages affected in Sukoharjo are Kedungwinong Village, Plesan Village, Gupit Village, Celep Village and Pengkol Village.

Currently, the factory has received administrative sanction from the regent due to odor pollution caused by the suspension of operations for eight months starting from January 2018.

"Because of being only temporarily suspended while waiting for silencers, the residents become traumatized and fear that if the factory is operating again, the residents will experience back breathing and other health problems due to the production process of the factory. These concerns are moving people continue to fight everywhere so that the factory's license is revoked and does not operate again," said Susianah, via information NNC received, Sunday (6/3/2018).

Susianah explained during the monitoring, KPAI met and listened to complaints from about 40 people directly affected, KPAI also interviewed a number of children who experienced chest tightness, sore neck, vomiting, prolonged dizziness and nausea due to the stench generated from the factory production process.

The meeting with the residents was liquid and some residents sobbed while recounting the conditions that happened when the factory owned by PT RUM was operating. It seems that people are traumatized and need trauma healing. Adult residents alone experience trauma, much less children.

Citizen related the stench is actually not continuously perceived but every day there must be the stench, the odor attack can reach five times a day. It can be morning, noon, afternoon, even midnight. Even using a mask and being covered by pillows too, the smell remains stinging and fulfills the chest.

KPAI obtained data on the number of children affected by pollution, among them from Ngarapah Hamlet reaching 48 children (14 of them are toddlers), Tegalrejo Hamlet 27 children (10 of them are toddlers), and Tawang Krajan 27 children (three of them are toddlers). All three hamlets are in Nguter Sub-district, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java Province.
