President Joko Widodo Appreciates Waste to Energy Processing Plant in Surabaya (special)

SURABAYA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Indonesian President Joko Widodo has expressed appreciation for the operating of a Waste Processing to Electrical Energy (PSEL) facility in the city of Surabaya. The President assessed that PSEL in the City of Surabaya is the fastest waste processing facility of the seven regions appointed by the President.

The President said that processing environmentally friendly waste into electricity is not easy, as there are still regulatory constraints which are not easy to deal with.

"However, the former Mayor of Surabaya (Tri Rismaharini) and the current Mayor can indeed move fast. I give two thumbs up," said the President when inaugurating the PSEL at the Benowo Final Disposal Site (TPA), Surabaya City, on Thursday (05/06/2021).

Present at the inauguration of the PSEL were Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif, Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa, and Mayor of Surabaya Eri Cahyadi, as well as related officials.

Joko Widodo said that realizing environmentally friendly waste processing into electrical energy is not easy. Since becoming the Mayor of Solo, and later becoming the Governor of DKI Jakarta, this dream has not been realized.

To overcome these obstacles, the President issued two regulations, namely President Regulation 16/2018 on Investment, and President Regulation 35/2018 on Electricity Rates.

On this occasion, the Mayor of Surabaya Eri Cahyadi said Benowo TPA has been operating since 2001. At that time, the Surabaya City Government was only able to manage 1,600 tons per day with an area of 37.4 hectares.

At that time, the Surabaya City Administration under the Mayor of Surabaya at that time, Tri Rismaharini, wanted an effective waste management, with community participation increased by 3R, reuse, reduce, and recycle as an effort to reduce waste that enters the Benowo TPA by up to 20 percent. However, the municipal government wants to be even more effective with the collaboration with PT. Sumber Organik.

"The PSEL can produce 11 megawatts of electricity, of which 2 MW is from the Power Plant, Insya Allah (God Willing), and 9 MW comes from the power plant classification," he said.
