LASIK Prohibited for Pregnant Women

Pregnant women are prohibited from undergoing Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis or LASIK procedures.

JAKARTA, NNC - Eye Specialist dr. Zoraya Ariefia Feranthy warns that pregnant women are prohibited from undergoing Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis or LASIK procedures.

LASIK is one of the reactive surgical technologies in the field of the eyesight that can be relied upon to improve the quality of life. Through LASIK, one can see clearly without the tools of refraction disturbance which is one of the most common vision disorders experienced by the world's population.

Dr. Ranthy explained, hormonal factors greatly affect the presence of glands that produce water and oil in the body. While in the eye, there are tear glands that are highly affected by the work of hormones, such as hormones during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding conditions are said to be factors that cause tear producing hormone to be low, so the eyes become dry.

"In addition to the ability to see during pregnancy, there are pressures that change, starting from the blood vessels to the pressure of the eyeball. These may cause visions to change and will return to normal after childbirth and breastfeeding is complete," said dr. Ranthy.

Therefore, if LASIK is performed to pregnant women, the procedure will not yield actual results.

"If LASIK is done while pregnant, there are risks, such as infections and inflammation and other disturbances to the healing process," said dr. Ranthy.
