8 Civilians Killed by Landmines in Benghazi City

TRIPOLI, NETRALNEWS.COM - At least eight civilians were killed and eleven others injured by militant groups’ landmine blast in Benghazi City, East Libya.

According to a statement by Benghazi hospital officials, the October’s statistics came from the Sabri area and city center, where the rest of the Faatik guerrillas are located.

"Amongst the victims were two Palestinian citizens and one Egyptian," the official said on Saturday (11/4/2017) as quoted by Xinhua.

The statement refers to another victim of a landmine blast that has been received by another hospital in the city.

Benghazi is the second largest city in Libya and the birthplace of the 2011 resistance movement that ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The city also witnessed a three-year war between military soldiers led by General Khalifa Haftar and militant guerrilla groups.

In early June Haftar announced the takeover of the entire city of Benghazi and the defeat of rival armed groups. However, some of the remaining guerrillas still occupy some areas of the city and mainly use landmines in their attacks.
