MOSCOW, NETRALNEWS.COM - The Russian government said on Wednesday (10/23/2019) that the United States (US) had betrayed and left the Syrian Kurds.
Russia suggested the Kurds to withdraw from the Syrian border according to an agreement between Moscow and Ankara, or accept torture from the Turkish military.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov's statement to Russia's news agency came after an agreement agreed by Russia and Turkey on Tuesday, which will see Syrian and Russian troops deployed to the northeastern region of Syria to transport Kurdish YPG fighters and their weapons from the border with Turkey.
Peskov, who reportedly reacted to the statement of US President Donald Trump's special envoy, James Jeffrey, complained that it appeared the United States was suggesting Kurds to stay close to the Syrian border and fight the Turkish military.
"The United States has become the closest Kurdish ally in recent years. (However) the US is leaving the Kurds, and in essence, betraying them," Peskov said.
"Now they (US) prefer to leave Kurds on the border (with Turkey) and almost force them to fight Turkey."
If Kurds do not back down in accordance with an agreement between Moscow and Ankara, Peskov said that Syrian border guards and Russian military police must withdraw, leaving Kurds to be handled by the Turkish military.
