Iran FM Urges World to Fight US Unilateralism amid Covid-19 Outbreak

Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif (politico)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has urged the world to form a new way to fight the unilateralism of the United States (US) amid a worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

"We are all together. To deal with the corona virus, we need to work together better. But to get there, the war on multilateralism, international cooperation, and the rule of law must end," Zarif said.

Foreign Minister Javad Zarif's statement was aimed at US sanctions which prevent Iran from mobilizing all of its resources to fight the corona virus.

Since leaving the 2015 multilateral nuclear agreement with Iran in May 2018, US President Donald Trump has carried out what he calls "maximum pressure" sanctions on Tehran.

US sanctions are targeting Iran and its international partners, including European countries which are trying to engage in trade with Iran.

Secondary sanctions are said to target foreign companies doing business with Iran. Affected countries, including China, said the ban violated their sovereignty because their bilateral interactions with Iran were targeted by a third country, the US.

"My country is one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus. Just as other countries, we are now learning how to deal with it better. Most of the dangers faced by Iran are due to unfair restrictions imposed on them by the US government,"said Javad Zarif.

Iran is currently the most sanctioned country in history, and the sanctions are not in line with UN decisions.

"The economic embargo on Iran is hampering all legitimate trade and depriving us of our own resources needed to meet people's needs, including their health and livelihoods," he said.

Even in the midst of this pandemic, he said, the US government had completely refused to remove sanctions against Iran.

As a result, Iran may not be able to buy drugs and medical equipment.

"The bigger tragedy is that many companies and countries that officially oppose these sanctions have chosen to comply with it perhaps in the hope of avoiding the wrath of the United States in the future, even though President Trump repeatedly proves that it is just wishful thinking," he said.
