JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - How many of us sleep with pets at night? Although there are no clear statistics about the habit, usually pet owners let their favorite pets join the bed.

However, for those of you who still do it, you should start thinking about the health risks as a survey in the UK revealed that half of all dog and cat lovers sleep with their pets in bed, even though they are aware of the health risks that may happen.

A recent video published by Inside Edition has stressed the dangers of sleeping with pets. Two pet owners who participated in the video had allowed their dogs' legs to be examined in the laboratory to test different forms of bacteria.

The results showed that all the dogs tested had E. coli, a type of bacteria commonly found in the gut. Not only that, they all carry some kind of bacteria and fungi. Even one dog can carry a virus that causes pneumonia and meningitis.

Despite the results of laboratory tests, the owners claimed to be retaining their habit of continuing to sleep with their pets despite greater precautions.

The survey results also found, of the at least 2,000 dog and cat owners surveyed, as many as 30.5 percent claimed to never wash or clean their pets.

The pets may carry and spread stomach insects like salmonella, and may infect humans with parasites, fungal infections, ribbon worms, and some superbugs, The Mirror said.

It’s understandable why many pet owners choose to sleep with their furry friends.

A small study conducted by the Mayo Clinic earlier this month found that sleeping in the same room as your pet could actually cause a "quieter night".

But only the pet is in the same room, not on the bed. The findings show, sharing the same bed with dogs or other pets, negatively impact on sleep quality.

Pet owners who have asthma and animal allergies are also told to keep dogs away from the bedroom. About 60 percent of all human viruses can be transmitted by animals.
