JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Joan Laporta, President of La Liga giants Barcelona, is set to announce a series of changes at the club as they approach the end of a disappointing season.
Barca are confirmed to finish third in La Liga this season, with their former striker Luis Suarez able to win the Spanish League trophy with Atletico Madrid.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid is currently in second place, and they still have a chance to win the La Liga trophy this season. Los Blancos have collected 81 points, two points adrift of Atletico.
Barcelona itself is not without a title this season. They have won the Copa del Rey, but were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
The future of Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has been debated in recent weeks, with former Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez being linked as the Dutchman's replacement starting next season.
Speaking at the Catalan Sports Festival, Laporta said that decisions about the club's future were imminent.
"I said I would review things with the team at the end of the season, in terms of how they played and the results," he said, as quoted by Reuters and reported by Antara on Wednesday (05/19/2021).
"We won the Copa del Rey and are very proud of it, but we were eliminated from the Champions League from the start, and lost our chances in the league in a way that I cannot understand."
"Starting next week, you will see a series of decisions being taken that need to be made, and we will announce them," Laporta continued.
"When I talk about it as the end of a cycle or a necessary update, it's because I think that's what we need to do."
Laporta was voted as president of Barcelona for the second time on March 2021.
