JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - McLaren has announced a multi-year contract extension with Lando Norris after the young English rider produced impressive form in Formula 1 this season. The announcement was made on Wednesday (05/19/2021)

The 21-year-old racer has been part of the McLaren team since 2017, initially as a test racer and simulator.

Norris went on to become a McLaren test and reserve rider in 2018, he participated in a number of training sessions, before racing for the Woking team for the full season in 2019.

"I am very pleased to extend my partnership with McLaren starting in 2022. After being with this team for almost five years, I feel I have become part of this family and cannot imagine starting the next phase of my career anywhere else," Norris said, as quoted by McLaren's official website.

"McLaren has supported me a lot since the junior series, and I have really enjoyed learning and developing as a racer since then."

Since his debut in F1 at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix, Norris has emerged as one of the most talented and popular riders on the grid, as reported by Antara.

He has twice climbed the podium for McLaren at the 2020 Austrian GP, and the Emilia Romagna GP earlier this season. Norris is currently fourth in the riders' standings, and is heading to finish with points for the ninth straight time.

"My commitment to McLaren is clear. My goal is to win races and become world champion in Formula 1 and I want to achieve that with this team," said Norris.

The contract extension solidifies the McLaren riders' ranks, confirming Norris as a partner for Australian racer Daniel Ricciardo (31), who has also started a long-term partnership with the team from 2021, for the sake of stability for the team towards the next season and their goal of becoming a top team.

"He has been instrumental in our return to form at McLaren, and we are proud of the progress he has shown since he first started with us in 2017," said McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown of Norris.

"Lando is one of the brightest talents on the Formula 1 grid, and we look forward to seeing him getting stronger both on and off the track."

Team head Andreas Seidl added, "Our decision to confirm Lando's long-term future at McLaren is very easy. Lando has impressed us since his rookie years with his performance, and his evolution as a rider is very clear."

"He's been an integral part of our recovery plan and his record so far, securing two podiums ... has shown he's a formidable competitor on the track.

"Like him, we have strong ambitions for our future together, and I am pleased that we are continuing this journey towards the next round both with Lando and this team.

"In Lando and Daniel, we see enormous talent and an interesting lineup of riders, and this announcement is a strong signal of our commitment to the next round for McLaren from 2022 onwards."

This weekend, Norris and Ricciardo will race the McLaren MCL35M wrapped in a retro Gulf Oil livery to the Monaco Grand Prix.
