BERLIN, NETRALNEWS.COM - Sami Khedira has finally decided to hang up his shoes as a professional footballer at the end of this season.
Khedira announced his decision to retire as a football player through his personal Instagram account on Wednesday (05/19/2021). The former Germany national team, Real Madrid, Juventus, and VfB Stuttgart midfielder will officially retire at the age of 34.
A series of injuries have disrupted Khedira's career, but he has won numerous titles at several football clubs and national team level with Germany. At his peak, Khedira helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Hertha Berlin is the latest club he played for. Through his Instagram account, Khedira said he will play the last match of his career as a football player this weekend when Hertha meets Hoffenheim on Saturday (05/22).
Khedira has played for a number of famous football clubs in Europe during his career. These include Real Madrid, Juventus, and the club that made his name, Stuttgart. He has also helped his teammates win at the Bundesliga, LaLiga, and Serie A.
He also won the Champions League when he was playing for Real Madrid in the 2013/14 season, followed by the European Super Cup, as well as the 2014 edition of the Club World Cup.
"It is exactly 14 years ago when I was allowed to celebrate the championship with VfB Stuttgart. It was an extraordinary day. Today is a very difficult day for me personally, as my football career will end on Saturday at around 17:15," Khedira said, as quoted by BBC on Thursday.
"It's a pretty difficult move, and it's hard for me to talk about it, but it's the right decision. Fifteen years in professional football have left a mark on me, and have made me honest about what I can and cannot do."
“First of all, I want to keep my distance and relax. I will continue to engage in football, in what form it remains to be seen," he added.
Khedira is known as a central midfielder who is able to maintain the balance of the team in defending and attacking.
He plays full of energy and is good at reading games. However, injuries began to disrupt his career since joining Juventus.
Khedira joined Juventus in 2015. He extended his contract at the Turin-based club in 2018, but he was unable to maximize his contribution due to injury and being diagnosed with a heartbeat disorder.
In February 2021, Khedira joined Hertha, which eventually became the last club in his career as a professional football player.
